Sound familiar?

Signs your ears need clearing

Ear wax is natural — but when it builds up and hardens, it blocks sound and comfort. If any of these feel familiar, one appointment usually solves it.

Blocked, full feeling

Like a plug or pressure that won’t clear, even after swallowing or yawning

Muffled hearing

Voices and TV sound like they’re underwater or behind a door

Earache or discomfort

A dull ache or irritation deep in the ear canal

Ringing or buzzing

Wax pressing on the eardrum can trigger or worsen tinnitus

Itchy ears

Persistent itching deep in the canal you can’t reach

Whistling hearing aids

Wax build-up is the most common cause of feedback in hearing aids

Audiologist performing microsuction ear wax removal

Why microsuction

The method hearing professionals choose

Microsuction removes wax with a gentle vacuum under direct vision — the audiologist sees exactly what they’re doing at every moment. No water, no syringing, no mess: just clear ears, usually in under half an hour, performed by HCPC-registered audiologists.

What happens at your appointment

Cleared in three gentle steps

1. We look first

We examine your ear canal thoroughly before anything else — if there’s no wax, we’ll tell you honestly and only a £20 consultation fee applies.

2. Gentle microsuction

A fine, soft suction tip lifts the wax away under direct vision. No water, no pressure — most patients describe it as a slight tickle.

3. Hear the difference

Sound returns instantly for most patients. We check both ears are healthy before you leave — usually all within 30 minutes.

Understanding ear wax

Why ears block — and the ways to clear them

Ear wax (cerumen) is your ear’s own cleaning system — it traps dust and debris and slowly carries it out of the canal. Problems start when it’s produced faster than it leaves: narrow or hairy ear canals, regular earphone or hearing aid use, cotton bud habits (which push wax deeper) and simply getting older all make build-up more likely. Once wax hardens against the eardrum, hearing drops and the ear feels full — and no amount of yawning fixes it.

The three ways wax gets removed

Microsuction — what we use

A gentle vacuum under direct vision. No water, works on hard or soft wax, safe for perforated eardrums and hearing aid wearers, done in one visit. The method used in ENT departments.

Irrigation (syringing)

Warm water flushes the wax out. Effective for soft wax, but not suitable for everyone — including perforated eardrums or previous ear surgery — and wax usually needs softening for days first.

Ear drops alone

Olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops soften wax and sometimes clear mild build-up over weeks. Useful preparation, but hardened blockages usually still need removing professionally.

Your appointment is with Sumit Joshi or Priyanka Joshi (BSc Hons, RHAD) — HCPC-registered audiologists — with a careful examination of your ear canal before and after removal.

Keep them clear

Five audiologist tips for healthier ears

Skip the cotton buds

They push wax deeper and pack it against the eardrum — the most common cause of blockages we see.

Oil, occasionally

A drop or two of olive oil weekly keeps wax soft and moving if you’re prone to build-up.

Dry ears gently

After swimming or showers, dry the outer ear only — trapped moisture swells wax.

Hearing aid wearers

Have your ears checked every 6–12 months — aids naturally push wax inward.

Don’t wait for pain

Muffled hearing is the early sign — clearing it early is quicker and gentler.

Ear wax questions

Good to know

Does microsuction hurt?

No — most patients describe it as a slight tickling sensation. There's no water and no pressure, and the audiologist can see exactly what they're doing throughout.

How long does the appointment take?

Usually under 30 minutes for both ears, including the examination before and after.

How do I know it's ear wax and not something else?

You often can't — which is why we always examine your ears first. If there's no wax, we'll tell you honestly, explain what we can see, and only a £20 consultation fee applies.

Should I use olive oil before my appointment?

It can help soften hardened wax — two or three drops daily for a few days beforehand makes removal even gentler.

How often should ear wax be removed?

It varies — some people never need it, others every six to twelve months. Hearing aid wearers often need it more regularly, as aids can push wax deeper.

Is the both-ears offer available at every clinic?

The £60 both-ears offer (code 20OFF) is available at Wimbledon, Wallington and Addiscombe until 31 August 2026. At Teddington, the standard £60 single-ear price applies.

★★★★★

“It was the first time I have had wax removed and this microsuction method is excellent. The audiologist put me at ease straight away and the procedure was gentle, painless and effective. Price very reasonable.”
