Home Visit Hearing Tests and Ear Wax Removal in South West London

Not everyone can get to a clinic. Mobility, illness, caring responsibilities or simply the effort of a journey can mean that blocked ears or a hearing problem get put off for months. A home visit solves that: the audiologist comes to you, with the same clinical equipment we use in clinic, and carries out the full appointment in your own chair. This guide explains what a home hearing test and home ear wax removal involve, who they suit, what they cost and how to arrange one across South West London and Surrey.

Quick answer

A home visit hearing test costs £89 and home ear wax removal costs £139, in and around Wimbledon, Teddington, Wallington and Addiscombe.

You get a full ear examination and pure-tone hearing test, or gentle wax removal, with your results explained before the audiologist leaves. Nothing to prepare beyond a chair and a quiet room.

Who home visits are for

Most people who ask us for a home visit fall into one of three groups. The first is anyone for whom travel is painful, tiring or not possible right now: recovering from surgery, living with limited mobility, or unable to manage stairs and public transport. The second is families and carers arranging care for a relative who would find a clinic visit stressful or confusing. The third is residents of care and residential homes, where we work with staff to keep appointments calm and unhurried.

A home visit is not a lesser version of a clinic appointment. The equipment is portable, but it is clinical equipment, and the audiologist is the same HCPC-registered professional you would see in Wimbledon or Wallington. We do not see patients under 18 at home; children’s hearing is best looked after by paediatric audiology services.

What happens at a home hearing test

A home hearing test follows the same steps as a test in clinic, which we describe in detail in our guide to what happens at a hearing test. The audiologist will:

  1. Ask about your hearing. Where you struggle, how long it has been going on, any ringing, dizziness or ear infections, and your general health.
  2. Examine your ears. An otoscope check of both ear canals and eardrums. If wax is blocking the canal, it needs to come out before an accurate test is possible.
  3. Carry out pure-tone audiometry. You wear headphones and press a button each time you hear a tone, across a range of pitches and volumes. This produces an audiogram, the chart that shows your hearing at each frequency.
  4. Explain the results. Before leaving, the audiologist goes through your audiogram in plain language and tells you what, if anything, would help.

The main difference from clinic is the room. A quiet living room works well; we will ask to turn the television off and close a door, and we bring everything else. The NHS guide to hearing tests describes the same pure-tone test as the standard way adult hearing is assessed.

What happens at home ear wax removal

Blocked, muffled ears are the most common reason people ask us to visit. The appointment starts with an examination of both ears. If there is no wax to remove, we tell you so and discuss what else might be causing the symptoms; nobody should have a procedure they do not need. If wax is the problem, it is removed gently using portable equipment, and we check the ear canal and eardrum afterwards.

Two practical points help. If you can, use olive oil drops for two or three days beforehand, as softened wax comes away more easily; the NHS earwax advice explains how. And please do not try cotton buds or ear candles in the meantime, as both tend to push wax further in. Our article on microsuction, syringing and ear drops compares the methods if you want the detail.

What a home visit costs

We keep pricing simple and fixed. A hearing test at home is £89. Ear wax removal at home is £139. Both prices apply in and around our clinic towns of Wimbledon, Teddington, Wallington and Addiscombe, which in practice means within about 20 minutes’ drive of one of our clinics. A little further out, a £50 call-out charge covers the journey where we are able to travel. Full details are on our home visits page.

For comparison, in clinic a hearing test is £59 and ear wax removal is £60 for one ear or £80 for both, so the home visit premium reflects the travel and the time. If you or your relative can manage a clinic visit, that is the cheaper route, and at Wimbledon, Wallington and Addiscombe both ears are £60 with the code 20OFF until 30 November 2026.

Hearing aids at home

If the hearing test shows that hearing aids would help, we can carry on at home. We are independent, so the recommendation is based on your hearing and your day-to-day life rather than one brand; we fit Phonak, Signia, Oticon and Widex. Fitting, follow-up adjustments and aftercare can all be done at home, and every hearing aid we supply comes with four years of unlimited aftercare. Prices start from £798 for a single aid and £1,695 for a pair; the full list is on our hearing aid prices page. A home visit never comes with any obligation to buy.

How to arrange a home visit

Call us on 020 8150 7178, or book online and mention that you would like a home appointment. Tell us a little about what is going on, where you are and any access details, and we will agree a time that suits you. If you are arranging the visit for a parent or relative, it helps if someone who knows their history can be there, though it is not essential.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hearing test at home be as accurate as one in a clinic?

For most adults, yes. We use portable clinical equipment to examine your ears and carry out pure-tone audiometry, and a quiet room at home is usually fine. If your results suggest something that needs a sound-treated booth or a medical referral, we will say so.

Do you visit care homes?

Yes. We regularly see residents in care and residential homes across our area and are happy to arrange visits with staff or family members present.

What do I need to prepare before a home visit?

Very little. A comfortable chair and a reasonably quiet room are all we need; we bring all of our own equipment. For wax removal, using olive oil drops for a few days beforehand can make the appointment quicker.
