About earwax removal
A build up of ear wax is a common issue which should always be treated by a qualified hearing expert, and not at home, to prevent damage to the ears. Microsuction is a modern technique in which ear wax can be removed gently with minimal discomfort.
The procedure has revolutionised the way that we can effectively remove a build up of ear wax, and is the preferred method amongst audiologists and ENT specialists. Microsuction delivers better results compared to older, outdated methods of ear wax removal such as syringing.
How microsuction is performed
Ear wax removal using microsuction is performed with the aid of an otoscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids.
The otoscope is used to look into the ear, whilst the suction device works to gently suck the wax from the ear canal.
There is no downtime after the procedure, and once the ear wax has been removed, your hearing quality will be back to normal.

Ear wax removal home visits
At The Hearing Specialist, your hearing health is our priority. That's why when you can't come to us, we'll come to you.
A build up of ear wax, when left untreated, can worsen over time and severely impact the quality of your hearing. We don't want anyone to be unable to make an ear wax removal appointment, so that's why we introduced our home visits service.
Our home visits service for ear wax removal covers Croydon, Banstead & Sutton, but we may be able to travel further afield if required.
The Hearing Specialist carried out a hearing assessment and analysis and was very efficient and clear in his explanations and recommendations. The website has several information topics which I found very helpful.Google Review
The benefits of microsuction
1. Fast and effective
The microsuction procedure only takes around 20 minutes from start to finish
2. Minimal preparation
Microsuction is fuss-free and can usually take place immediately. We use olive oil based ear drops to soften the ear wax first, in order to make the procedure more comfortable
3. Gentle
Microsuction is a comfortable and usually pain-free procedure which is very well tolerated by the majority of people
4. Lasting effects
The results of microsuction can generally last between 6-12 months, depending on the frequency that your ear produces wax, and the type of wax it produces
How to keep your ears clean
Tips for cleaning your ears at home
Although a severe build up of ear wax should only be addressed by a qualified audiologist or ENT specialist, there are some steps that can be taken at home to safely clean your ears of unwanted wax.
Applying olive oil based ear drops will soften and break down the ear wax over time. These should be applied using a spray bottle to spread the drops deep and evenly in the ear canal whilst lying down.
The softened ear wax will eventually make its way from the ear canal to the ear opening, where it will usually dry up and fall out. This is usually encouraged by the movement of chewing and moving your jaw.
This is the safest way to clean your ears at home, but should not be done if your ears are badly blocked and you can't hear anything. In this instance, you should book in for ear wax removal with a professional.
