Microsuction
The method preferred by ENT departments
Blocked ears, muffled hearing or a feeling of fullness are most often caused by a simple build-up of wax. Microsuction removes it under direct vision using gentle suction — no water, no syringing — and is suitable for patients syringing cannot help, including those with perforations or previous ear surgery.
Examination first
Your ear canal and eardrum are examined carefully before any treatment, and again afterwards, so you know exactly what has been done.
Gentle and precise
Wax is lifted away under direct vision with fine suction. Most appointments are complete within thirty minutes.
Usually one visit
The majority of blockages are resolved in a single appointment, with the improvement in hearing usually apparent at once.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is microsuction better than ear syringing?
Microsuction removes wax under direct vision without introducing water to the ear. It is gentler, more precise, and suitable for patients syringing cannot help — including those with perforations or previous ear surgery.
Should I use olive oil before my appointment?
A few days of olive oil may soften particularly firm wax, though it is not essential — microsuction manages most wax without preparation.
How quickly can I be seen in Croydon?
The Addiscombe clinic runs on Thursdays, 10am–2pm. Should you need an earlier appointment, our Wallington clinic (Tue–Sat) is a short drive away.
What if there is no wax to remove?
Your ears are examined before any treatment. If wax is not the cause, we will tell you plainly and advise on the appropriate next step — including a hearing assessment where indicated.
Can I have a hearing test at the same appointment?
Yes. Where wax is masking your hearing, it can be removed and your hearing assessed accurately within the same visit.
